            Math:

The students will identify and construct elements of geometric figures.

Other Content Standards:

The students will identify, describe, and form polygons having up to ten sides.

The students will present logical arguments about the properties of basic geometric figures.

The students will identify and construct two-dimensional patterns.

The students will explore and predict relationships within patterns in designs.

The students will use given assumptions to determine properties of figures and relationships between figures.

Brief Summary of Unit:

This unit will enrich and extend the student’s understanding of geometry by constructing geometric figures, shapes and designs, using a compass and a protractor.

Students will Understand:

Students will understand how to construct geometric figures using compass and a

protractor.

Essential Questions:

1.         What is a construction?

2.         What are the basic tools to construct a geometric shape?

3.         How can you use the properties of a shape to construct the shape using geometric tools?

4.         How well can you comprehend and follow directions of a constructed design to replicate the design using geometric tools?

5.         How can you create instructions to replicate a given geometric design?

Key Knowledge and Skills the Students will Acquire:

After working through the material, the students will be able to:

a)      demonstrate the understanding of the vocabulary of geometry

b)      demonstrate the skills to construct a geometric shape

c)      learn to use the tools of geometry

d)      learn to develop an awareness of spatial sense

e)      view geometry as active mathematics

Assessment Plan:

There are 16 basic constructions in the unit.  Each student will perform a construction on the white board each day, while others perform the construction at their desk.

A portfolio of constructions and designs will be handed in at the end of the unit.

A summary page of the unit will be written and included in the portfolio.  The portfolio will be analyzed by parents and summary page must be signed by parents before handed in and graded.

A rubric will be used to grade each portfolio.

Learning Activities:

Use the geometry sketchpad to construct geometric shapes with technology.

Students will do each construction together with instructor on white board.  Then will have a construction of the same sort to construct on their own to add to their portfolio.

Students will be presented with instructions to follow that will construct a  given design.

Students will be given a design and must create instructions to follow that will lead to the given design.

Students will put together a portfolio of their constructions and designs.

Students will add a summary page at the end of their portfolio on what they have learned from constructions.

Peer Reviewer Comments:

This unit will challenge the students and give them a better understanding of geometrical shapes.  The activity will be a good teaching tool.
